AIMS members and other companies demonstrated a host of IPMX and ST 2110 enabled solutions at ISE 2024. Here’s the full list.
The Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) today announced a newly elected 2020-2021 board of directors that will lead the organization’s effort toward a standards-based IP infrastructure for professional media. AIMS Chairman of the Board Michael Cronk (Grass Valley), Vice Chair Steve Reynolds (Imagine Communications), and Chief Financial Officer Andreas Hilmer (Lawo) were re-elected to their positions and are joined by newly elected board members Terry Holton (Yamaha) and Andrew Starks (Macnica).
IPMX: Debunking the Myths, by David Chiappini, AIMS Pro AV Chairman, Matrox.
IPMX is an AV-over-IP standard for the pro AV market based on SMPTE ST 2110 and the NMOS set of open standards and specifications. Chiappini will describe how IPMX builds on top of this solid foundation to fulfill the requirements of pro AV customers—and dispel the common misconception that SMPTE ST 2110 is overdesigned for most pro AV use cases and will result in unnecessarily complex and expensive solutions. His presentation will highlight some of the unique characteristics of IPMX that enable simpler, more cost-effective solutions.

“With the pace of IP adoption and innovation accelerating, our work to educate the broadcast and Pro AV markets is as — or more — important than ever,” said Cronk. “Terry and Andrew both have contributed enormously to the success of AIMS in promoting a common set of standards for IP media transport across the media and entertainment industry. We are pleased to welcome them to the AIMS board, where they will be invaluable in helping us to carry on this critical work.”
Terry Holton has served as AIMS audio chair, leading a number of initiatives and AIMS participation in several audio events. Holton was previously general manager of the Yamaha R&D Centre in London. He is now a consultant specializing in professional media networking solutions and represents Yamaha in AIMS.
Andrew Starks is the director of product management for Macnica, where he leads the company’s standards efforts and has been a significant contributor to the AIMS Pro AV initiative, including the development of the IPMX roadmap, and its marketing plan. His prior experience includes co-founding Tightrope Media Systems, where he collaborated to design and market multiple award-winning products in Pro AV and broadcast as the company’s CMO.
AIMS board members are selected annually. Their terms start immediately.

The market for professional AV technology and services has leveraged technological progress from multiple fields to drive down costs while simultaneously adding new capabilities in many applications each year. The most advanced installations always find creative ways to use technology to achieve what was previously impossible.
“The IPMX website makes it easy for anyone to learn more about this exciting approach to AV over IP,” said David Chiappini, working group chair, Pro AV Workgroup at AIMS. “In addition to outlining the fundamentals of IPMX and the benefits it enables, the website provides up-to-date information on related events and presentations by industry experts. The site is a one-stop shop for those interested in finding out more about IPMX and how it can be implemented within their operations.”
The Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) today introduced its newest member: Magewell, a designer and developer of innovative hardware and software solutions for media capture, conversion, and streaming. The company joins AIMS as adoption of SMPTE ST 2110 continues to accelerate in the broadcast market and the alliance’s new Internet Protocol Media Experience (IPMX) set of open standards and specifications gains momentum in the Pro AV industry.
“Increasing AIMS participation by leaders such as Magewell signals a growing understanding of the value that IP brings to both the broadcast/production and Pro AV markets,” said David Chiappini, chair of the AIMS Pro AV Working Group. “We’re pleased to welcome Magewell to the alliance and our work to educate and support the industry as it migrates to IP.”
Magewell was founded in 2011 as an R&D center and manufacturer of video capture devices. The company since has expanded its technology portfolio to include live streaming, encoding, decoding, and conversion, as well as embedded systems for video processing. End users, integrators, and OEM customers around the world rely on Magewell products to bring high-quality video and audio signals into and out of IP media workflows and third-party software for live streaming, production, web conferencing, and more.
“One of our key strategic initiatives is making the transition to IP workflows practical and affordable for our customers,” said Nick Ma, CEO and CTO of Magewell. “We are committed to helping our customers leverage open standards, including SMPTE ST 2110, to achieve these objectives, and joining AIMS is an important milestone in this mission. AIMS’ recent introduction of the IPMX specifications for AV over IP further reinforces AIMS’ alignment with our goals, as we develop products for both the broadcast and professional AV markets. We look forward to working with the alliance and other AIMS members.”
IPMX addresses the Pro AV industry’s need for a single set of common, ubiquitous standards-based protocols that ensure interoperability for AV over IP. Implementing a standards-based approach based on SMPTE ST 2110, IPMX proposed open standards and specifications are designed to enable carriage of compressed and uncompressed video, audio, and data over IP networks. IPMX features tailored to Pro AV installations include AMWA NMOS IS-04 and IS-05 for discovery and registration, as well as connection management, and specifications for copy protection and security.
The Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) will be participating in InfoComm 2020 Connected, the virtual audiovisual and integrated experience event running June 16-18. InfoComm 2020 Connected will feature AV product information, training, keynotes, and networking. Throughout the event, AIMS will showcase the new Internet Protocol Media Experience (IPMX) proposed set of open standards and specifications and how they address the Pro AV industry’s need for a single set of common, ubiquitous, standards-based protocols that ensure interoperability for AV over IP.
“IPMX is the first and only open-standards approach to AV over IP, and this alone makes our virtual booth at InfoComm 2020 Connected worth a visit,” said David Chiappini, working group chair of the AIMS Pro AV Work Group.
“As the Pro AV world increasingly moves toward IP, IPMX provides a flexible, future-proof framework that ensures the interoperability and long-term utility of Pro AV systems. We encourage attendees to stop by to chat live with our experts, learn about the benefits of IPMX and consider joining AIMS and helping to shape the future of AV over IP.”
